Substations: Keep your distance
Substations are common in residential areas and help supply electricity to homes and businesses, but it’s important to be aware that:
- Only trained professionals are allowed inside.
- If you notice an open gate, damaged fence, or anything unusual, you should call the number on the substation sign.
- Substations are safe as long as you stay outside the boundary.
- Even if you have dropped something inside, you shouldn’t go in – contact us at network@aurora-utilities.co.uk – and we’ll retrieve it safely.
Underground cables: What to watch out for
Electric cables are often buried underground – and they’re not always where you’d expect, did you know:
- Not all cables are shown on plans, and they don’t always run in straight lines.
- Their depth can change, and past work may have moved them.
- You must report a damaged cable to us immediately and stay clear.
- You should avoid using tools like stakes, pins, or forks where cables may be present.
Overhead power lines: Stay alert
Overhead lines can be dangerous – even from a distance, so it’s important to:
- Assume power lines are live.
- Look up and around before starting any work.
- Avoid risk around them even if they just look like telephone wires.
- Be aware that power lines are often uninsulated and can carry high voltage.
- Keep fires well away – heat can weaken lines and cause them to fall.
- Be mindful that objects like poles, ladders, ropes, trees – and even water – can conduct electricity.
- Consider that electricity can jump gaps, so you don’t need to touch a line to be injured.
Warning signs: Don’t rely on them alone
Warning signs may be missing or hard to see – so danger can still be present without a clear sign.
If you do see a sign, treat the warning seriously.
Even low-voltage cables can be harmful, and high-voltage ones can be deadly without direct contact – ensure anyone vulnerable avoids contact with these.
Quick safety tips:
- Always assume electrical equipment and overhead power lines are live
- Keep your distance from overhead lines and substations at all times
- Never enter a substation – even if it appears open
- Consider where you enjoy hobbies – such as fishing or kite flying
- Report any damage as soon as you see it
- Don’t try to retrieve items from substations yourself – we’ll help
Take particular care when working:
- At height such as tree trimming or roofing
- With machinery, digging, excavating or handling a demolition.
If you are building a permanent or temporary structure close to power lines, it’s a legal requirement to notify us in advance to ensure your building is a safe distance away. This avoids the need to relocate our equipment in the future.
