Behind every successful infrastructure project lies careful planning and expertise. For Aurora, Laura Simons, our Land Rights Coordinator, has been a driving force in helping to build the processes that keep projects moving forward. From creating new tools to streamlining systems, Laura has already made a lasting impact in her first six months.

With a career built on curiosity, problem-solving, and a passion for detail, Laura’s story is one of growth and impact. Here, she shares her journey into the energy sector, what excites her about working at Aurora, and her perspective on the vital role of IDNOs.

Q: Can you summarise your career to date for us Laura?

A: “I began my career at BUUK Infrastructure, which is a multi-utility network provider in the UK,  joining as a Land Rights Coordinator without any prior experience in property or utilities. At first, it was a completely new world for me, but I quickly found my footing and developed a strong interest in the legal and property aspects of the role.

“Through hands-on training and mentoring from solicitors, I was able to build a solid foundation, developing expertise in key documents such as leases, transfers, and deeds of easement. What began as a chance opportunity soon became a true career passion.”

Q: That’s great, and can you tell us about any exciting projects you have been involved in?

A: “Over the years, I have built a portfolio of projects. One standout experience was securing land rights over infrastructure serving major UK airports and police stations; complex, sensitive projects that demanded meticulous attention to detail.

“Since joining Aurora six months ago, I’ve helped to design and implement internal land rights processes from scratch. I am particularly proud of my work creating a custom tracker that has become a central reporting tool for the team. It’s been really rewarding to see my ideas making a tangible impact across the business.”

Q: Why did you want to focus on land rights in particular?

A: “Well, what began as a search for structure and career progression has become a real calling for me. I enjoy being the person who brings everything together, solving problems and seeing projects through to completion. It’s a role that rewards organisation and communication, which really suits my strengths.”

Q: What interested you in a role at Aurora?

A: “I was attracted by the opportunity to join Aurora in its early days. There was no land rights function in place when I joined since the company only launched in 2024. That felt like such a rare chance to help build something important from the ground up and influence how it was shaped.

“It’s also a varied role which I like. As Land Rights Coordinator, I manage the process end-to-end: reviewing highways and ownership, coordinating with solicitors, landowners and ICPs, and keeping stakeholders aligned. I also lead reporting processes internally, ensuring clarity and momentum across teams.”

Q: What impact is Aurora making in your opinion?

A: “For me, Aurora stands out because of its flexibility and openness to new ideas. Unlike larger incumbents with rigid processes, Aurora adapts to meet customer and partner needs. Here, my feedback is genuinely valued, and I’ve been able to implement solutions that really benefit the business. That kind of openness sets Aurora apart.”

Q: And, how would you describe the role of an IDNO?

A: “IDNOs as essential players in today’s utilities landscape: They bring competition and choice, which drives efficiency and innovation. IDNOs can often move faster and be more responsive than traditional operators, and that makes a huge difference for developers and customers alike.”

Working as part of Aurora’s in-house legal team, Laura is proud of the collaborative culture she has helped foster: “We work across departments to ensure processes are not only compliant but also practical. That quick, solution-focused approach really helps projects progress smoothly.”

Her story is one of growth, adaptability, and passion for making things better. At Aurora, we’re proud to have Laura as part of our team, shaping the future of land rights and helping us deliver infrastructure that supports the UK’s transition to a sustainable future.
